Bio

Jeff Pilson, while currently the Bassist and Producer for classic rock band Foreigner, is perhaps best known as the bassist for the legendary rock group Dokken. He is also known for playing and writing with the late Ronnie James Dio in the band Dio on three of their CDs, including Dio’s last, 2003s “Master of the Moon”. He also played bass with MSG on their self titled 1991 CD, then toured with them playing12 string acoustic guitar on their 1992 acoustic tour. He had a flirtation with acting, appearing in the 2001 film “Rockstar” alongside Mark Wahlberg, Jennifer Anniston, Zack Wylde and Jason Bonham.

Jeff’s first major label record was the rock musical “Rock Justice” which came out on EMI in 1980. The musical had been penned by The Jefferson Starship’s Marty Balin. Jeff played the part of the lead singer, as well as playing bass on the record. Then through a phone call from Mike Varney (legendary label owner, Guitar Player Magazine columnist and known organizer of musicians), Jeff joined Dokken in 1983 and was a member through 1989, where the band sold 7 million records, toured the world, and even got nominated for a Grammy.  After Dokken’s initial break up, Jeff had his own band War and Peace, then joined with MSG and later (in 1993) Dio. With Dio he cowrote and recorded the CDs Strange Highways and Angry Machines as well as touring the world with the band. There is, in fact, a recently released DVD of Dio’s 1993 performance at The Hammersmith Apollo in London, a great testimony to an amazing band. Then he rejoined his Dokken compatriots at the end of 1994 to record the acoustic “One Live Night”. Next he cowrote, recorded and released the CDs “Dysfunctional”, “Shadowlife” and “Erase the Slate” with Dokken before leaving the band in early 2001. Jeff became a full time producer for the next few years (in between promotional appearances for “Rockstar”) and also recorded with Dio for “Master of the Moon”. Then came the call to join Foreigner, where he has been firmly entrenched since 2004. They have recorded (and Jeff produced) several Live CDs including “Live in 05”, “Live at the Ryman”, “Feels Like the First Time”, “The Classics Unplugged” and the 2011 classic “Acoustique”, a beautiful rendition of Foreigner classics done in the studio with an unplugged interpretation. He also played on the 2009 release “Can’t Slow Down”, the first new Foreigner material in nearly 15 years.

Jeff is also known for a great deal of production work. As well as the aforementioned Foreigner CDs, he’s produced CDs by Adler, Last In Line, Kill Devil Hill, Benedictum, TNN and many others.

So yes, Jeff’s a busy guy. But his passion for the bass guitar has never waned and his love of all styles remains at an all-time high. His heroes have always been Chris Squire, James Jameson, John Paul Jones and Cliff Williams.

Lots of touring with Foreigner, then a classic Dokken line-up reunion in Japan in October of 2016 fill out his immediate schedule. But Jeff carries a full-on pro tools rig with him while on tour, and would love nothing more than to spend his day recording tracks. Never a dull moment for this guy!!!!!
